This brand new evolving history tour will walk you through some of the literary scholars of Charleston, South Carolina. Walk the streets with author, Nicholas McGirr and hear the tales of the authors that helped shape Charleston to it’s present day charm and darkened past.
This tour and route will constantly change as the literature of Charleston is studied further and tied to visitor friendly locations around the city. Some of the authors to be currently discussed are listed below.
This tour runs Thursday through Saturday starting at 6:30 PM for 75-90 minutes. Introductory pricing is at $22/ticket.

H.P. Lovecraft
Though not from Charleston, this cosmic thriller writer visited often and contemplated moving here. He met with many authors from Charleston.

Josephine Pinckney
Descendent of indigo plantation owner, Eliza Lucas Pinckney, Josephine created a picture of Charleston’ ‘s social classes through her novel “Three O’ Clock Dinner” and displayed some witchcraft through “Great Mischief”. Pinckney hosted many parties to other writers of her time in her home on Chalmers Street.


Edgar Allan Poe
Poe was stationed near Charleston under the name Edgar Perry. While stationed here he found inspiration to one of his most famous poems.
Henry Timrod
Known as The Laureate of the Confederacy, Timrod’s life story is as fascinating as the last page he’s written and marked. This page is displayed for the public only on Halloween each year.


DuBose Heyward
Most famous for his novel “Porgy”, this writer’s timeline can be found on Church Street from his inspirations to performances to his burial.
David Ramsay
Historian and physician, Ramsay introduced the smallpox vaccination to the United States all while being known first as a writer of American History including a biography of George Washington.


Rudolph Siegling
Fighting in the Civil War, Siegling was pronounced dead, only to return to Charleston to take over his father’s business and become president of Charleston’s newspaper, The News & Courier.
