We’ve created this Field Guide to help you navigate your media below. There are paranormal evidence examples to aid you in what to look/watch/listen for in your own data set along with a short tutorial of each device used in nightly investigations.

To learn more about an individual device or a full category of devices (spirit boxes, paranormal cameras, etc), you can visit the Stories in the Cemetery Paranormal Research School to enroll into our courses designed to help you become a better, more versatile, paranormal investigator.

Our first course on Spirit Boxes is currently free while it’s in development. Use code “FREE” at checkout. Though only four lectures are posted, you’ll have access to the entire course (9 total lectures).

EVP Audio

This first audio contains all the histories we discussed during your investigation along with any EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena) that may have slipped through.

Photographs
Big John’s Tavern. Use the slidebar to compare the original photo with a filter of lightened 1x for clarity.

Lower left hand corner is a light flare from the IR Torch of the Phasm Camera. The giant orb floating just right of center cannot be explained with the direction in which the Phasm Cam is pointed.

SBox Spirit Box Audio

These are the terms/phrases I discovered during my spot check of the SBox spirit box audio. Those that are noteworthy have an explanation and/or links in their description. Others are there to help you learn what to listen for as you go through this type of audio.

Part 1

  • 0:21 “field agent on your team”
  • 5:14 “my soul”
  • 5:29 “hopeless”
  • 10:34 “seventy…hundred” A bit broken. Eliza Lucas was 70 when she passed away in 1793.
  • 15:44 “hotter” The Pinckney Mansion was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1861.
  • 20:33 “in my life”
  • 26:01 “Bible”
  • 30:24 “March 7th” This one is interesting and confusing. There is apparently a fourth Charles Pinckney, a Colonel Charles Pinckney, born on March 7, 1731.
  • 35:32 “in the house”
  • 45:56 “in the swan song”
  • 50:28 “government”
  • 50:52 “gift of a priest”
  • 55:49 “twenty-nine, ninety-three” Eliza Lucas died in 1793.
  • 1:00:44 “avenue” (song lyric)
  • 1:05:23 “but John”
  • 1:10:54 “wall” Cumberland Street, at the end of Philadelphia Alley, is where the original Charlestown wall once stood. This has shown up here before.
  • 1:15:37 “IRS” This wouldn’t be noted if it weren’t for the “IR” showing up on the Onvoy device. These are the reversed initials of Ralph Isaacs, or where Dr. Joseph Brown Ladd came from, Rhode Isand.
  • 1:20:58 “nothing”
  • 1:26:02 (whistle) (very quick) Still near Philadelphia Alley where we discussed The Whistling Doctor.
  • 1:30;16 “sixteen ounces”

Part 2

  • 0:11 “get down on the floor”
  • 5:36 “brutally”
  • 10;24 “judges me”

Real Time Events based on Location :

Names of locations in Green are links to the original investigations conducted by Stories in the Cemetery and will hold extra resources of each location.

Pinckney Mansion Site: The K-II EMF Detector gave readings of 15-25mG (milligauss). The EMF function of the Mel Meter gave the following readings: 6.3mG, 12.3mG, 16.1mG, 16.2mG, 17.3mG, 20.5mG.

Terms heard on spirit boxes: “forty-two”, “eighty”, “doce” (in Spanish, this is number 12, which could be part of the date of the Great Fire of 1861, 12-11-1861), “sorry I love you”, “New Year’s”, “don’t talk to me”, “three years ago”, “built this city”, “Christmas”.

Philadelphia Alley: Terms heard on spirit boxes: “ ninety-five”, “one oh five, five”, “it’s running”.

The Onvoy device gave the letters “IR”, the reversed initials of Ralph Isaacs. See “IRS” above in the SBox findings.

Powder Magazine: Terms heard on spirit boxes: “two hundred”, “I was dead”, “I’d run”, “106682”, “get what you pay for”, “ten dollars”, “forty-first”, “all I see is you”, “pirate” (doesn’t get much clearer than this when discussing Anne Bonny and Mary Read), “this is gold” (noteworthy that “gold” also showed up on the word list above), “ninety-six”, “before midnight”, “holiday”, “Joey and Jack” (we were discussing Anne Bonny’s lover, John “Calico Jack” Rackham).

The Onvoy gave an anagram of “SALEM” by providing the following sequence of letters: “LSAEM”.

Washington Square: Small spike discovered on the EMF function of the Mel Meter of 6.0mG.

Terms heard on spirit boxes: “magic”, “bad”, “black”, “not well” (vague, but Timrod died of tuberculosis), “cigar”, “Michael” (we were next to St. Michael’s Church), “temperance”, “work from his hands” (Timrod was a writer in a time without technology), “God”, “shield”, “fifteen”.

Pinckney Mansion Site: The EMF function of the Mel Meter gave spikes of 10mG (milligauss), 14mG, 22mG, 24mG, 36.4mG. There were several Green and Blue REM readings which indicate motion near the user.

Terms heard on spirit boxes: “sell this home”, “forty-two”, “thirty”, “Lord”, “emancipation”, “ninety-five”, “forty-three”, “December third” (this investigation took place on Eliza Lucas’s birthday, so there’s at least part of her birthdate), “in laws died suddenly”, “fire” (the Pinckney Mansion was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1861), “rooftop”, “died suddenly” (while discussing Baby George).

Philadelphia Alley: The song lyric “hands on my knees” was heard when entering the alley. Dr. Ladd was shot in the kneecap during his duel with Ralph Isaacs.

Pinckney Mansion Site: The EMF function of the Mel Meter gave spikes of 3.0mG (milligauss), 3.2mG, 4.4mG, and 5.0mG. The REM function of this device gave a slight/quick “Blue” reading indicating motion near the user.

Terms heard on the spirit box: “evil” (on the way from the Big Red Barn), “1971”, “God”, “pray” (the Pinckney family was a devout family, religious terms are common while at this location).

Philadelphia Alley: The term “shooting” was heard as we entered this alley once known as Dueler’s Alley.

Powder Magazine: Terms heard on the spirit box: “AJ”, “Irish town” (Anne Bonny was originally from Ireland. Her maiden name was Anne McCormac, changed to Cormac when they moved to the Georgetown area), “she’s a woman” (common to hear female gendered phrases/terms here), “he was buried”, “died”

Philadelphia Alley: Terms heard on spirit boxes: “horse” (heard several times starting with exiting the Pinckney Mansion site), “walking around”.

Powder Magazine: Terms heard on spirit boxes: “pay attention”, “Johnny” (John “Calico Jack” Rackham), “five hundred thousand”, “fifty-five million”, “fifty-three”, “ninety-two”, “pirates” (doesn’t get much clearer than this when discussing Anne Bonny), “shield”, “Rachel”, “don’t leave” (as we were about to wrap up the space).

Thermal Imaging Video

Around the 41:00 marker, you’ll hear a conversation about the heat signature on the left-hand side of the Powder Magazine and how the SLS App I was using picked up a figure in the same area.  Although uncanny, based on the other heat signatures in that general area, this cannot be confirmed as being a paranormal anomaly. It is noteworthy of the “cooler” shade of darker orange to the left of the “human shape” continues to move in human-like motions, and the rest of the same shades of orange do not.

Real Time Events based on Location :

Names of locations in Green are links to the original investigations conducted by Stories in the Cemetery and will hold extra resources of each location.

Pinckney Mansion Site: The EMF function of the Mel Meter gave a small spike of 6.7mG (milligauss).

Terms heard on spirit boxes: “danger”, “dangerous” (heard directly after danger on a separate spirit box), “remember”, “ten a.m.”, “whores”.

Philadelphia Alley: Another EMF spike of exactly 6.7mG discovered here.

Terms heard on spirit boxes: “intrigue”, “stay together” (as we entered the alley), “seventy-eight”, “guns ‘n roses” (excited for this one on two accounts. First, discussing dueling, which takes guns. Second, the address where Dr. Ladd lived, 59 Church Street, is now known as the Thomas Rose House. This is the only house with a historical marker that tells a ghost story in Charleston), “watch for him”, “oh, Mandy” (we were discussing Dr. Ladd’s fiancée, Amanda), “one two three three” (almost like counting the paces during the duel), “April first”

Powder Magazine: Terms heard on spirit boxes: “angry”, “man-eater” (we were about to discuss the many lovers of Anne Bonny), “the pirate we need” (doesn’t get any clearer than this), “New World” (discussing Anne Bonny’s childhood and how she left Ireland), “I kissed a girl” (after discussing the possible love affair between Bonny and Mary Read), “all wearing red” (without any defining secondary clue, this could be relative in one of two ways. First, we commonly see “red” on the REM feature of the Mel Meter after asking Anne Bonny to show us her hair color. OR….to the British Navy that came to take down John “Calico Jack” Rackham’s ship), “horns”, “punishment”.

Washington Square: EMF spikes on the Mel Meter: 7.0mG, 10mG, 12mG, 13mG, 14mG, 16mG, 19mG, 21mG, and 38mG.

Terms heard on spirit boxes: “Garrett”, “forty of them”, “seven oh seven”, “he was a failure”, “John”, “seven to ten days” (when asking about the birthday of Henry Timrod’s son, Willie. A stretch but his birthday is Christmas Eve, just eight days away from this investigation), “curse of thirteen”, “Philadelphia freedom”, “NOLA”, “virus” (Timrod died from Tuberculosis which is a virus), “speak with such passion” (Timrod was labeled the “laureate of the Confederacy”), “Christmas Eve” (Timrod’s son, Willie, has a birthday of Christmas Eve), “Zeke”, “innocent”, “cough” (Tuberculosis causes heavy coughing and sneezing. Timrod displayed this in his final cough on the Blood Book).

Real Time Events based on Location:

Names of locations in Green are links to the original investigations conducted by Stories in the Cemetery and will hold extra resources of each location.

Pinckney Mansion Site: The EMF function of the Mel Meter gave spikes of 2.7mG (milligauss), 3.2mG, 4.8mG, 22.0mG. The REM function of this device gave several definitive Blue readings, indicating motion near the user.

Terms heard on spirit boxes: “Nancy”, “John” (bleed over from Big John’s Tavern just one block away), “all the ladies are ruined”, “forgiveness” (very welcoming term considering the unwelcoming terms heard in prior weeks).

Philadelphia Alley: Terms heard on spirit boxes: “sixty-four” and “July” (two parts to Dr. Ladd’s birthday of July 7, 1764), “fifty”, “connect”, “pray” (common to see/hear religious terms near St. Philip’s Church).

Powder Magazine: The REM function of the Mel Meter gave a Blue reading indicating motion near the user.

Terms heard on spirit boxes: “convicted on all accounts” (we were discussing the pirate trials of Anne Bonny and Mary Read), “c’mon”, “once”, “significant other”, “government”, “marginal”.

Washington Square: EMF spikes from the Mel Meter: 4.5mG, 4.7mG, 5.9mG, 16mG, 29mG, 37.9mG, 39mG (x2).

Terms heard on spirit boxes: “1862” (I had just recited a stanza from Timrod’s 1862 poem entitled “Charleston”), “six twenty-eight” (the only “28” I could find in relation is the year of Timrod’s birth: 1828. Apologies if I misquoted this year in real time), “blood” (discussing Timrod’s “Blood Book”), “lost”, “come back”, “why you care”, “broken”, “Sanderson”, “wanted”, “soldier” (discussing Timrod’s enrollment into the Confederate Army during the Civil War), “six twenty-four” (very close to the 628 heard earlier, but the “24” could be relatable to Timrod’s son, Willie, whose birthday is Christmas Eve), “Johnny”, “evil spirit”, “Word of God” (near St. Michael’s church), “something unholy”.

Terms heard on spirit boxes: “reserve”, “reservation”, “championship game”, “Elisa” (very close to Eliza), “zero”.

Powder Magazine: The EMF function of the Mel Meter gave one spike of 11.8mG. Noteworthy to mention that little to no EMF readings are discovered at this location.
